The Census Bureau has finally embraced modern ideas of race, ethnicity, and identity… and I’m still confused what to do
After decades of wrangling, on March 28, 2024, the United States Census Bureau finally updated its requirements and available selections surrounding the collection of “race and ethnicity” data. Notably, instead of continuing to consider those two terms to be separate categories, one of the key components of this announcement was calling what they wanted to gather a singular subject. For instance, in the decennial survey in 2020—the one required by the U.S. Constitution to count all people in the nation every ten years—the choices for race as a stand-alone element were:
American Indian or Alaska Native
Asian
Black or African...
